Nicolette Good - “Pretty Clementine”

A second song by Nicolette Good, but this time instead of a sleepy dreamer song, a kick-ass and almost angry rocker. Nicolette has proven to me that between these two songs, she’s going to be a songwriter to follow. Anyone who can mix in “My Darling Clementine” into a song like this is going places. Hell. Yes.

“Gypsy Jane” by Strung Like a Horse is not only a great Jazzy, Bluegrassy song, but it’s a helluva a fun video too. (It really picks up around the 45-second mark, stick with it.)

Strung Like a Horse is a Chattanooga-based no-rules-holding-us-back “Bluegrass” band in the vein of the Old Crow Medicine Show or Red Stick Ramblers, but with the old-time and Cajun turned down just a bit and the acoustic Jazz turned up.

Jeff Strahan - “She Only Hates Me”

Here’s one for my Dad! Great mix of Blues and Classic Rock. The New Braunfels, Texas-based Jeff Strahan tears up the stage with his guitar and keyboards. I’d love to see them live someday.

(My Dad has been in a Blues & Classic Rock band for over 10 years. I think he’d love this song as much as me.)

Kavinsky - 1986

Imagine you’re a twenty-something millionaire in 1986, just minding your own business, high on cocaine and driving your Ferrari Testarossa just a tad too fast in the California desert. (Like say, oh 90 miles an hour or so.) And you crash. But your body disappears from the wreckage.

Got all that? Good, now hang on for the weird.

Now imagine your disappeared body wakes up as a self-aware zombie a little more than thirty years later (2007). You immediately set out to learn how to make electronic dance music, right?

That is exactly the storyline behind French DJ Vincent Belorgey’s pseudonym, Kavinsky.

Kavinksy’s electronic music sounds like a cross between Daft Punk and the Real Genius soundtrack. To put it another way, take some Jan Hammer (of Miami Vice theme fame), blend it with the Spy Hunter video game theme music, but produce it with the modern electronic techniques of today. Voila, instant retro electronica that rocks.

Kavinksy’s work has been used in the Grand Theft Auto IV soundtrack and on the movie Drive. I also recommend his “Teddy Boy” and “Nightcall” EPs. The latter is more popular, but I think starts to lose some of the best 1980s movie soundtrack feel.

Bow Thayer - “Wingless Angels”

Bow Thayer isn’t here to take any of your shit. He’s here to growl and pick a thick-fingered acoustic guitar whose notes will knock your ass to the ground. This song rocks.

Thayer’s “Hindsight” album is a retrospective of his work since 1995. This song, “Wingless Angels,” originated on his excellent 2006 “Spend It All” and features Levon Helm on drums.
